What Does It Mean to Live a Gloriously Ordinary Life?

Living a gloriously ordinary life means different things to different people. For some, it’s the simple joy of a morning cup of tea in peace, the thrill of spotting a bird outside your window, or the excitement of crisp new bedsheets. For others, it might mean embarking on a holiday or connecting with loved ones over shared laughter. Regardless of the specifics, the essence of a gloriously ordinary life is the blend of the mundane and the magical, the ordinary and the extraordinary – experiences that together make life meaningful, fulfilling, and uniquely ours.

At its core, this philosophy is deeply inclusive. No matter our race, gender, disability, or background, we are all human beings deserving of a life that feels both ordinary and glorious in equal measure.

Bringing the Philosophy to Moorview Care

At Moorview Care, this vision resonates deeply. Those we support deserve to live gloriously ordinary lives just as much as our team members do. We’ve committed to breaking the mould of traditional Social Care practices, challenging outdated norms, and creating a culture that is truly person-centred.

To help us achieve this, members of our Leadership and Management teams have engaged in comprehensive training with Tricia, the founder of Gloriously Ordinary Lives. Through her expert guidance, we’ve learned how to bring this transformative philosophy into our everyday practices, ensuring that everyone we support – and everyone on our team – has the opportunity to live life on their terms.

Recently, Colleen , our Head of Learning & Development, shared this knowledge across Moorview Care. By leading workshops and engaging our Management Team in Tricia’s Five Tests, Colleen has equipped us to fully embrace Gloriously Ordinary Lives’ principles. This training is more than a tick-box exercise – it’s an opportunity to redefine what care means and elevate our approach to supporting individuals with learning disabilities and autism.

The Impact of the Five Tests

The Five Tests are at the heart of this transformation. These principles challenge us to think critically about the lives of those we support and to continuously ask ourselves how we can enable them to live in ways that are meaningful to them. From the language we use to the opportunities we create, the Five Tests serve as a lens through which we can make better decisions and foster a culture of genuine inclusion and respect.

For Olivia Close, our Marketing Lead, learning about the Five Tests has been an eye-opening experience:

“My main takeaway from the day was how our Support Team and the people we support genuinely benefit from Moorview Care implementing Gloriously Ordinary Lives best practices. Being in Marketing, I think a lot about the language we use, and we as a team always ensure we never use dehumanising language – unlike a lot of the Social Care industry. But actually learning about how the people we support will be, and already are, benefitting from us questioning and ensuring the Five Tests are at the forefront of everything we do was eye-opening. It's not just about how we talk to or about our people; it's about enabling them to live a gloriously ordinary life.”

For Colleen, the importance of this philosophy cannot be overstated:

“Gloriously Ordinary Lives has transformed how we approach care at Moorview. It’s about giving people the autonomy to make choices – whether they want to enjoy a walk in the park, learn a new skill, or simply spend time in their favorite space. Everyone deserves to feel respected and valued for who they are, and these principles give us the tools to make that happen every day.”

A Shared Commitment

At Moorview Care, we reject the notion of “us and them.” Instead, we embrace the idea that everyone – whether they are a member of our team or someone we support – is part of the Moorview Care Family. This sense of togetherness drives our commitment to creating a space where everyone can thrive and live their best life.

Through Gloriously Ordinary Lives, we are not just a care provider – we are a movement. We are redefining what it means to provide care, focusing not on ticking boxes or meeting minimum standards but on enabling real, meaningful, human experiences.

Colleen and the entire Moorview Care Family are dedicated to spreading this message far and wide, ensuring that every individual we touch has the opportunity to live a gloriously ordinary life – the life they want and deserve.
