From Support Worker to Cluster Manager: Luke’s Journey with Moorview Care

Updated: 2 days ago

Four years ago, Luke Kelly decided to give social care a go. Today, he’s Cluster Manager for Hull and Bridlington – and he can’t imagine doing anything else.

“I joined Moorview Care as a Support Worker,” Luke explains. “My brother is autistic, so I had some lived experience and thought I’d see if I enjoyed it. Nearly four years later, I’m a Cluster Manager. It’s become a career – not just a job.”

Luke’s passion for care grew with each new step. Shortly after completing his probation, he applied to become a Senior Support Worker – and got the role. A year later, a Team Leader position opened up. Again, Luke put himself forward – and again, he was successful.

“As a Team Leader, I really found my passion,” he says. “I could make bigger changes, a bigger difference. I was supported all the way to build my knowledge and experience.”

When the Cluster Manager role was created, Luke decided to go for it – even though he wasn’t sure he’d be successful. “To my amazement, I got it,” he smiles. “Now I’ve passed my probation and I’m fully part of the management team. I’m proud of that.”

Luke’s journey hasn’t been a solo one. He speaks warmly of the support he’s had from across the organisation. “From Catherine in business support, to Louise and Sam in operations – everyone’s been amazing,” he says. “But two people made the biggest difference: Cheryl, who was a Senior when I started and now works in training, and Sami, the manager before me. They took the time to upskill me, support me, and give me the knowledge I needed – even when I was a bit frustrating to manage!”

Reflecting on the sector, Luke is clear: “Social care is underrated. There’s not enough public understanding or recognition of what we do. But we work with amazing people, and it feels good to know someone else feels happy or safe because of something you’ve done. It takes a special kind of person to work in this field – and I think our teams are brilliant. They’ve got the right values, the right passion.”

So what’s next for Luke?

“I enjoy it. I can’t see myself doing anything else. Just health and Social Care – for the rest of my life.”
