Bradley’s Journey to Independence at Mustard Seed

Bradley is a dedicated volunteer and has a new-found confidence in his role at Mustard Seed, a community kitchen in Whitby. After initially attending with support for two weeks, Bradley now goes independently, with the team dropping him off and picking him up after two hours.

What I Wanted to Achieve and Why...

"I help out at Mustard Seed."

Bradley’s shift starts with a warm cup of tea and a chat about the day’s baking and cooking plans. Sometimes, he even gets to choose what to prepare. His role includes gathering ingredients, learning where they are stored, and understanding their appearance—building valuable kitchen skills along the way.

What We Did...

"Staff walk me to Mustard Seed and drop me off. We start with a cup of tea and a chat about what we will bake and cook. Sometimes, I get to choose. I help by getting all the ingredients out and learning where they are kept and what they look like."

Under the guidance of Dierdre, a Mustard Seed team member, Bradley carefully follows recipes, measuring and mixing ingredients. While he avoids using the oven for safety reasons, Dierdre is pleased to have Bradley's help. Bradley is learning essential cooking skills while growing in confidence. Clearly a favourite in the kitchen, he always gets to take home a sample of what he has helped create.

"We then follow a recipe, and I follow Dierdre’s instructions, measuring and mixing. I know not to go near the oven, and Dierdre does this. When we have finished cooking, Dierdre always gives me a sample to bring home."

How Did It Make Me Feel?

"I felt happy, excited, and relieved that I have found a job and I really enjoy it."

This sense of achievement has motivated Bradley to take on more responsibilities and increase his involvement.

Would I Do It Again?

"I will, and I offer to work extra days."

Looking ahead, Bradley is keen to expand his role and contribute even further.

Would I Do Anything Differently?

"Yes, I am going to help out serving there at the OAP’s lunch."

This case study has been written with the support of Dawn, who supports Brad in Whitby. Dawn has been assisting Bradley in documenting his journey.
